CBS/Rather apology accepted here

Tonight’s CBS Evening News broadcast was historic, and I had a profound sense (for the first time) that CBS realizes the enormity of its error and honestly regrets what has happened. I realize there are still unanswered questions, and I hope the independent investigation is thorough and conducted by a mix of different journalists. I’m also sure that there will be a continued cry for Rather’s head and ongoing judgments that the admission was disingenuous. Nevertheless, I thought tonight’s broadcast was a strong step in the right direction. Things will never be the same, but I think that’s a good thing. Apology accepted. Turn the page.

    Terry,

You’ve got to be kidding? A major network uses forged documents to collude with the Kerry campaign, synchronizing its "Fortunate Son" campaign with Terry McAwful’s and you accept the apology? The mind boggles.

  2. Holly Says:

I don’t accept their apology, either, Rivlax, because they apologized for the wrong thing. The sin was not in their bias — which is simply that they convinced themselves the documents were real because they so desperately *wanted* them to be real — but in still pretending to not be biased. Just freakin’ admit that you want Kerry to win, okay? Just admit it. The whole country knows it already. DUH.

I didn’t say forgive and forget. Besides, the (potential) politics involved is a different matter. I’m talking about making a journalistic mistake, and the road to the truth begins with an apology, which I accept. If I refused to accept it, I would be a hypocrite, for I, myself, have also made journalistic blunders.
